This is a very feminine film, artistically cut together and filmed on location with available light. I had heard good things about this highly personal journey, based on a non-fiction memoir.
Wild is an emotional odyssey, tears and pain. I had worried that it might get bogged down in endless shots of Reese hiking, which it does occasionally, but the real story is told through the many flashbacks.
There’s a metaphorical quality and a universality to dealing with loss and forging on anyway. Reese is strong and committed, one of the best actresses around. So this personal, tiny story of one woman’s inner struggle works.
It’s good to see personal stories brought to the big screen with such technical virtuosity. I recommend it as one of the best of the year.
