Another pick that somehow rose to the top of my queue, this 2005 film is a major surprise. Pscychological thrills with the emphasis on the psychological.
In other words I had no idea what the hell was going on for half the film. It was in that twisted genre where identity is fluid and the plot is secondary to figuring out what sort of dream you’re inside of. Films like Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Being John Malkovich, Brazil, Irreversible, Jacob’s Ladder, where it’s confusing as hell at the start, but eventually comes together, maybe, sorta.
This film is masterfully sewn together with astonishing visual tricks, particulalry the transitions. Some reminded me of Life of Pi, which was also stunning in its use of visual effects to progress from one scene to the next.
It would be a shame to give away crucial spoilage at this stage. If you like the kinds of films I’ve already mentioned you should definitely get Stay. It’s got Ryan Gosling, Naomi Watts (swoon), Ewan McGregor, Bob Hoskins. The score is mesmerizing, and the story tricks your mind repeatedly. It’s a master class in fucking with the audience’s brain through editing.
