Bad Times at the El Royale – My Review | #Movies

This modern noir crime film excels with characterization and style.

I’m happy about this pick. The cast was top notch: Jeff Bridges, Dakota Johnson, Chris Hemsworth–whom I didn’t even recognize. It’s a specific time and a specific place, where 60’s California meets Nevada.

The stories are grounded at the hotel, but they do flash back and fill in blanks at precisely the right moments. I could name a few others in this vein, such as Seven Psychopaths. These are lightning-in-a-bottle anomalies that make you remember why you go to the movies in the first place.

It’s also heavy with music, Motown specifically. The cinematic visuals and excellent soundtrack put it right over the top.
